A Pretty Darn Good Meeting!

The popular cry across our denomination is that Presbytery meetings are tedious and have little to show for a long day in the pew.  I can even confess to saying the same.  That, however, is not typical for New Castle Presbytery.  We have evolved!  Our meetings are structured to focus first on worship.  Clergy need a time to receive the Word and not always proclaim the Word.  All business matters are posted ahead of meetings and are introduced only when ready for action.  Time needed for administrative concerns to be addressed on the floor has been reduced to an average of less than one and one half hours.

We take the captured time and we learn new things.  We have guest speakers.  We gather for discussions in break-out groups.  We attend classes such as those offered through the VESSEL Institute.  Our Wicomico meeting was exceptional.  The Moderator of our church spoke, preached and provoked a lot of discourse on youth and young adults.  He was very clear to charge us one and all to avoid populist thinking and one size fits all church styles.  Be authentic, be genuine and be the best Presbyterians we can be, keeping in mind that our witness as followers of Christ is primary.

By the end of the day we sang, prayed, debated discerned, celebrated, dined, learned, listened and enjoyed one anothers company.

Not every meeting is a show stopper.  Not every sermon is a sizzler.  Not every committee is a delight.  But the discipline of attending and participating in this work creates the fellowship we know as the Body of Christ.

A word of thanks to Wicomico Presbyterian Church for hosting and for all those who taught the VESSEL curricula.

We had a pretty darn good time!

Blessings,

- Jim

CLP CliP

What a great Presbytery meeting we had on Tuesday at Wicomico Presbyterian

Church in Salisbury MD!  The fellowship and hospitality were delightful.  A number of CLPs and CLP students were present and attended the first class of the Worship and Sacraments Course taught by the Rev. Billie Starr Brightwell.  She is an excellent teacher and we are looking forward to the rest of the course.  More information on the course and Rev. Brightwell will follow in the next few weeks.

While there, the CLPs asked Lee Johnson to chair the CLP Advocacy group.  He will help coordinate information among the CLPs. (Lee is currently serving on COM along with Sally Cordrey.)  We also asked Judy Adams, Nancy Day and Carole Miles to serve on the CLP Steering Committee that works with COM in planning and direction of the CLP Program.  This is an exciting time as we watch the Program and its members grow.  We are grateful to New Castle Presbytery for its support.

Until next week, God bless!

Carole Miles

Green Hill Church Turns 160!

Green Hill Church turns 160 in June, and on June 7 during the 10:30 AM worship service we will celebrate the milestone with some special activities, followed by a reception.  The program will include some special music and a presentation by a speaker from Hagley Museum concerning the church's evolution from the Manufacturer's Sunday School.

All members of New Castle Presbytery are cordially invited to attend the occasion.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there.

Cordially,

Chick Reed, Worship Committee Chairman

MAY IS AMERICAN STROKE MONTH

Heart attack and stroke are life-and-death emergencies - - - every second counts.  Coronary heart disease is America’s No. 1 killer.  Stroke is No. 3 and a leading cause of serious disability.  That’s why it’s so important to reduce your risk factors, know the warning signs, and know how to respond quickly and properly if warning signs occur.  Become an Ambassador for Christ as Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 6:19 “ Your body, is the temple of the Holy Spirit.” You and I are called to be faithful stewards of our bodies.  We have the Power to End Stroke through bringing awareness of risk factors to our family, friends and neighbors.

Stroke Warning Signs:

The American Stroke Association says these are the warning signs of stroke:

·Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.

·Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding

·Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

·Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.

·Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

If you or someone with you has one or more of these signs, don’t delay!  Call 9-1-1 immediately!
